A de-icer is a substance which can be sprayed on car windscreens to remove ice or frost. Chemical de-icers prevent water molecules from binding below a certain temperature – in this case, 0°C. The most commonly used de-icing chemicals include; inorganic salts (sodium chloride, magnesium chloride), organic compounds (calcium magnesium acetate, sodium formate), alcohols, diols and polyols.
De-icing on a cold morning can be a real pain and set you back, which is why we have compiled a list of the best de-icers on the market:
Autoglym De-Icer. This de-icer screenwash is a high performance, premium screenwash that keeps windscreens clear in all weather conditions. It contains a highly concentrated formulation with active ingredients for 100% efficient cleaning. Effective to -50 degrees.
Bluecol Sub Zero De-Icer. This de-icer is a powerful and fast acting spray formulated to defrost windscreens down to -25°C.
Prestone De-Icer. This windshield de-icer is made from a concentrated high performance ice-melting formula that melts ice fast and helps reduce dangerous refreeze. Methanol is considered the most effective alcohol for melting ice. The high methanol content in Prestone Windshield De-icer ensures strong ice melting power down to -25°C.
Carplan Bluestar Trigger De-Icer. This de-icer effectively defrosts windscreens and removes loose snow from windscreens.
To de-ice your windscreen you should start by brushing away lumps of ice from your windscreen. Next, spray the de-icer onto the windscreen. Wait for a few minutes for the ice to defrost then use your wipers once the ice has melted to get any excess ice off your windscreen.
De-Icing Tips
•Do not use boiling water on your windscreen, it may be a quick way to thaw ice but it could shatter the glass.
•Keep the windscreen wipers switched off until the ice has thawed otherwise using them cold could get the rubber stuck on the ice and break your wipers.
•Avoid using makeshift scrapers from things like bank cards as this can cause damage to the glass.
