Motability, what is it?

Is there a catch?

There are no ‘catches’ but there are some items that are excluded, and it’s best to know about these from the outset. You’ll be responsible for paying the following:

  • Fuel and consumables (such as screen wash)

  • Optional extras that are not fitted to your model of choice as standard

  • Any adaptations that require an additional payment

  • Insurance Excess – there is a minimum excess of £75 on any claim for loss or damage. This excess varies depending on the age and experience of the driver. Full details can be obtained on application.

  • Fines incurred due to breaching parking restrictions or through speeding

Motability Driver

Motability is a charity that was set up over 40 years ago to help disabled people become mobile and more independent. This is a government funded scheme where people who receive a Mobility allowance can exchange part or all of their monthly allowance to lease a brand new car of their choice.

The Motability Scheme gives you the flexibility of three pricing options to help you keep mobile. These are:

  1. Cars costing less than your Mobility Allowance. You receive the remaining allowance.

  2. Cars costing the same as your Mobility Allowance.

  3. Cars with Advanced Payment which allows you to add to your Mobility Allowance by paying a one off upfront Advance Payment

The Motability Scheme has helped over 3 million people since its creation in 1978 to get back on the road and become independent again. The many benefits provided by the scheme explain why so many people have taken advantage of the opportunity.

Who can apply?

Disabled Badge

If you receive one of the following disability benefits you’re eligible for a new affordable car through the Motability Scheme:

  • Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance (HRMC DLA)

  • Enhanced Rate Component of Personal Independence Payment (ERMC PIP)

  • War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (WPMS)

  • Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP)

If you receive an allowance from one of the above or you care for someone who does; you can be a carer, parent, or nominated driver you are also eligible. To double check your eligibility please visit the ‘Motability Eligibility Checker’ page.

Once you’ve discovered if you’re eligible, you need to decide on a form of payment outlined above in the ‘Who Can Apply?’ section and then just choose the car that you fancy.

Howard Garages (Weston) Ltd is an Appointed Representative of Automotive Compliance Ltd, who is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA No 497010). Automotive Compliance Ltd’s permissions as a Principal Firm allows Howard Garages (Weston) Ltd to act as a credit broker, not as a lender, for the introduction to a limited number of lenders and to act as an agent on behalf of the insurer for insurance distribution activities only. Company Number: 1108986

We can introduce you to a selected panel of lenders, which includes manufacturer lenders linked directly to the franchises that we represent. An introduction to a lender does not amount to independent financial advice and we act as their agent for this introduction. Our approach is to introduce you first to the manufacturer lender linked directly to the particular franchise you are purchasing your vehicle from, who are usually able to offer the best available package for you, taking into account both interest rates and other contributions. If they are unable to make you an offer of finance, we then seek to introduce you to whichever of the other lenders on our panel is able to make the next best offer of finance for you. Our aim is to secure the best deal you are eligible for from our panel of lenders. Lenders may pay a fixed commission to us for introducing you to them, calculated by reference to the vehicle model or amount you borrow. Different lenders may pay different commissions for such introductions, and manufacturer lenders linked directly to the franchises that we represent may also provide preferential rates to us for the funding of our vehicle stock and also provide financial support for our training and marketing. But any such amounts they and other lenders pay us will not affect the amounts you pay under your finance agreement, all of which are set by the lender concerned. If you ask us what the amount of commission is, we will tell you in good time before the Finance agreement is executed. All finance applications are subject to status, terms and conditions apply, UK residents only, 18’s or over. Guarantees may be required.
