Thoughtful for the Future
In September, Citroen released it latest concept car in Paris, Citroen OLI, a completley unique vehicle that could offer some foresight into the future of citroen. The innovative new project was created with the aim to combine sustainability with affordability, and could give other electric vehicles on the market a run for their money.
In 1989, Citroen demonstrated its first ever electric vehicles, based on a combination of the C15 and C25 truck models. The product of this was later released in 1993 as the AX Electique, and so began the next generation of electric cars. It goes without saying that Citroen have come a long way since this initial launch. The Citroen OLI is unique in the way it is able to travel significantly further than the average electric vehicle. The design is simple, but retains everything you could need for a comfortable and enjoyable journey.

The average electric car has a range of 211 miles, and the average person drives around 30 miles a day. This equates to 7 trips before you would need to recharge your vehicle. To put this into perspective, the Citroen OLI can more than double this, claiming an ambitious range of 248 miles, with a  relatively small 40kWh battery. So how can this be done? Citroen have taken a bold step, decrease additional features, decrease the need for a huge battery.  The effect of this is an extremely light vehicle, at just 1000kg while the popular Citroen C3 weighs 1261kg. It's no secret that a lighter vehicle can travel much further, and in turn, leave less of a dent on the plant in the meantime.

Sustainablity
The Citroen OLI has been created using recycled, and recylable parts. Front doors, wheel arches, windows and bumpers are all interchangable, and can be used on either sides of the car. Citroen wanted to create a vehicle built to last for generations, and therefore have made it as easy as possible to repair, upgrade, and customise.
Affordability
17% of UK residents plan to buy an EV within the next 12 months, and a further 69% say they'd purchase an EV if money was no object. Citroen hopes to break down this barrier. In order to do this, OLI has been designed as cost effectively as possible with features like an upright windscreen, designed to reduce production costs.

Exterior
The unique exterior design of Citroen OLI is an eye catching blend of style and practicality. The roof and bonnet are composed of a lightweight cardboard honeycomb structure. The front of the vehicle homes vents designed to direct air around the windscreen. The back doors are rear hinged, and the lights angled for a sleek, futuristic appearance. The large alloy wheels give for a more sturdy driving experience.

Interior
Opening the door to a Citroen OLI might take you by surprise. The stripped back interior is a world away from the futuristic exterior appearance. To accomodate the smaller battery, less important features from the interior have been removed. Remaining features, like the air-con, have been downsized. The seats are composed of just 3 parts, and designed with a much lighter material than seen in previous models.

Technology
Citroen OLI is a simpler way to drive. The technology behind the vehicle reflects this ethos. Citroen have taken the bold move to remove the large center screen from the vehicle. In its place, Citroen OLI features portable speakers within the interior that allow the driver to insert their smartphone into the dashboard, eradicating the annoyance of difficult bluetooth pairing whilst simplifying the design and keeping the car light and compact.
So, when's it coming? The official launch date for Citroen OLI is yet to be released, but isnt expected until the end of the decade. Regardless, the innovative design and bold ethos behind the practicality of the vehicle certaintly give food for thought. Can we expect to see less tech in the future? The Citroen OLI will be an affordable alternative to an electric drive, expected to be priced around £20,000. With the price in mind, and the promise of longetivity for its users, perhaps we can expect to see more of this quirky looking vehicle in the future.

  • Howards Garages (Weston) Ltd is an Appointed Representative of Automotive Compliance Ltd who is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA No. 497010). Automotive Compliance Ltd’s permissions as a Principal Firm allows Howards Garages (Weston) Ltd to act as a credit broker, not a lender, for the introduction to a limited number of lenders, and to act as an agent on behalf of the insurer for insurance distribution activities only.

We are a credit broker and not a lender. We can introduce you to a carefully selected panel of lenders, which includes manufacturer lenders linked directly to the franchises that we represent. We act on behalf of the lender for this introduction and not as your agent. We are not impartial, and we are not an independent financial advisor.

Our approach is to introduce you first to the manufacturer lender linked directly to the particular franchise you are purchasing your vehicle from, who are usually able to offer the best available package for you, taking into account both interest rates and other contributions. If they are unable to make you an offer of finance, we then seek to introduce you to whichever of the other lenders on our panel is able to make the next most suitable offer of finance for you. Our aim is to secure a suitable finance agreement for you that enables you to achieve your financial objectives. If you purchase a vehicle, in the majority of cases, we will receive a commission from your lender for introducing you to them which is either a fixed fee, or a fixed percentage of the amount that you borrow. This may be linked to the vehicle model you purchase.

Different lenders pay different commissions for such introductions, and manufacturer lenders linked directly to the franchises that we represent may also provide preferential rates to us for the funding of our vehicle stock and also provide financial support for our training and marketing. But any such amounts they and other lenders pay us will not affect the amounts you pay under your finance agreement; however, you will be contributing towards the commission paid to us with the interest collected on your repayments. Before we propose you to a potential lender, we will inform you of the likely amount of commission we will receive and seek your consent to receive this commission. The exact amount of commission that we will receive will be confirmed prior to you signing your finance agreement.

All finance applications are subject to status, terms and conditions apply, UK residents only, 18s or over. Guarantees may be required.
