Yesterday, the fourth generation Toyota Prius was revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The Prius has never been a ‘normal’ looking car thanks to its chunky and unique exterior, but that hasn’t stopped it from being the world’s best-selling hybrid! The 2016 model will contain new and impressive features making it even better than the current model.
Strong Exterior
At first glance the Prius looks slightly similar to the hydrogen-powered Mirai. Toyota has designed the car as a ‘sibling’ to the Mirai but with an “athletic” twist.
The front looks like an aggressive face with sharp-edged headlights with bold character lines that swoop around to the sides. The angles that direct downwards to the front bumper gives the car a strong stance, you would not think this is anything different than a Prius. The extreme looks of the car come alive at the rear with 3D effect taillights that bend away from the body to a rear spoiler; this was a major eye-catcher at the launch event.
Peaceful Interior
Toyota has given the Prius a “peace of mind” interior with the instrument cluster in the centre of the dashboard, not in-front of the driver, so you feel more connected with the road. Toyota has made the powertrain more compact which has led to increased space in the cabin compared to previous models. The steering wheel and centre console have striking pearlescent white features giving it a futuristic appeal, the centre console even has a Smartphone holder with wireless charging capabilities.
Brand New Technology
The Prius is the most sophisticated model in Toyota’s range as it is used by the company to act as a technological ambassador to improve safety, convenience, performance and comfort.
New technology has been incorporated in to the Prius with Toyota’s first application of their New Global Architecture (TNGA). They claim this allows the Prius to have a lower centre of gravity which combined with a brand new responsive suspension package will bring the driver closer to the road.
Powertrain Improvements
Toyota has worked incredibly hard to develop improvements on the efficiency of the fully hybrid powertrain so the driver does not have to worry about range or usability. This improvement is hoping to change people’s perception of electric vehicles as it provides a more relaxed and rewarding drive than a conventional car. Toyota stated that the new Prius represents an 18% combined technological improvement.
“Prius changed the automotive and mobility landscapes for ever. Like previous generations this new Prius introduces an entirely new drivetrain that will find its way into a growing number of new Toyota models.” Karl Schlicht, Executive Vice President, Toyota Motor Europe
