Make way for the new Peugeot 308 GTi, developed by Peugeot Sport, this hot hatchback is heating up the competition with the VW Golf GTi and Ford Focus ST.
There are two versions of the 1.6-litre THP engine available with either 247bhp (badged 250) or 266bhp (badged 270). These engines have been specifically designed to give the driver a thrill of responsive acceleration and a strong stance when changing through the gears, bringing the fun back into driving. It’s also economical with 47mpg and clean 139g/km CO2 emissions.
The range topping model comes with a Torsen slip-differential on the front axle, Michelin Super Sport tyres larger brakes and 19-inch light-weight alloy wheels.
Peugeot’s 308 GTi is guaranteed to get you from A to B obscenely fast as the increased camber on the front axle is able to pull the car into a bend with ease. Then on the way out of a corner the differential will take care of the acceleration by sending torque to the outside wheel.
A sprint to 0-62mph takes 6.0 seconds and will thunder up to a top speed of 155mph. Accelerating is a pleasure as the car’s underbody perfectly vibrates in sync with the rev counter so you can hit the sweet spot when changing gears.
Practicality plays an important part in hot hatchbacks, the 308 GTi benefits from a 470-litre boot expanding to 1,309-litres with folded rear seats.
Turn heads as you drive the 308 GTi coated in the Coupe Franche Treatment for an additional £1,300 which includes the two-tone matt black and red paint job (opposite way round to the 208 GTi).
Feel closer to the road in the 308 as Peugeot have stiffened and lowered the suspension by 11mm. This combined with its wider tyres and larger brakes sticks the car to the road giving the driver the confidence to put their foot down.
There is an optional Driver Sport Pack which includes a Sport button on the centre console, increasing the sharpness of the steering and loudness of the engine.
