This week the 2015 Detroit Motor Show witnessed the debut of the next generation Honda FCV concept, the future zero emissions fuel-cell vehicle.
Set to be initially launched in Japan March 2016, the U.S and our shores will shortly follow, with the models introduction to the market already rumoured to re-shape the automotive design landscape.
Hydrogen powered, this latest concept continues Honda’s strong tradition of leading the development of fuel cell technology, building on a decade of innovation and creative technologies in greener fuels. The new FCV model will feature a spacious cabin by offering comfortable seating for 5 passengers, achieving an incredible driving range in excess of 300 miles. Refuelling times are rapid, taking approximately three minutes and with more fuelling stations popping up throughout the UK and Europe, getting refuelled will become a lot easier.
The power is derived from a fuel cell stack which snuggly fits under the bonnet. A new design and technological advancements also mean the fuel cell is over 30% smaller than before, helping to blend both function and design in perfect harmony. The overall size of the fuel stack and engine are about the same as a standard Civic or Accord, meaning previous concerns about the engine size-to-power ratio are eliminated as the FCV handily achieves both. The idea has been raised that because of the fuel cells compact sizing, it could possibly be retrospectively fitted to current Honda models, meaning the potential for a quick uptake in hydrogen powered engines.
A low profile means the car is aerodynamic, ensuring optimum range is achieved from the fuel, with a 60% increase in power density when compared to the previous Honda FCX Clarity, making the FCV high performance. Honda’s dedication to fuel cell technology is well publicised, with the manufacturer being the first to build and produce a dedicated fuel-cell vehicle on a custom fuel cell production line in 2008, providing a fuel-cell retailer network that showed vision and commitment beyond its time.
The FCV is going head-to-head against the Toyota, Mirai both looking to offer a 300 mile + of range and pitch their respective hydrogen models as being the perfect alternative to the gasoline car. The likelihood is both will be a massive success.
