The new Honda CR-V might have only just reached showrooms in the last few weeks but the revamped car has the benefit of 20 years’ experience behind it. That’s how long the CR-V in its various forms, has been on the roads, and plenty of those early versions can still be spotted, a testament to the dependability and durability of the model.
For 20 years’ experience, read 20 years’ continuous improvement, because the latest incarnation is a magnificent beast that hangs together rather beautifully. There’s a more aggressive stance when seen from the front, with the chrome-barred grille and wraparound headlights offering a no-nonsense look.
The new changes add to the minor tweaks earlier this year when the CR-V’s front and rear were lightly modded. The overall result is very pleasing.
Inside, it’s an almost button-free zone and high-quality plastics provide a classy feel. You’ll have fun fiddling with the touchscreen infotainment system. The cabin is exciting, slick and facilitates the demands of transporting restless kids.
Performance-wise, the 2.2-litre diesel has been scrapped. In its place is a new 160ps 1.6-litre diesel that’s unique to Europe. It brings more power, reduced fuel consumption and fewer emissions. The 2.2-litre’s fuel figures of 42.8mpg on the combined cycle have been replaced by 55.4 on the new unit. Emissions are down to just 134g/km or 115 on the manual which all makes a lot of sense financially and environmentally.
The new diesel also weighs 65kg less than the old unit, so the ride is better and the handling and steering is much sharper.
The Honda CR-V has a much sharper proposition than the previous model. Updates to the steering offer an 8% quicker ratio, and Honda has also played around with the dampers, bushings and other suspension-related gizmos to offer altogether smoother cruising.
The sense of refinement is completed by better sound insulation material, carpeting you could lose pets in and chunky door seals.
This is an outstanding package that also includes the option of a nine-speed gearbox, city braking and a super-smart adaptive cruise-control system.
Europeans have taken to the Honda CR-V in their millions and, with these slick and sharp improvements, its position as the continent’s top-selling SUV is unlikely to be threatened for many years to come.
