Jason Jones, from Howards Yeovil, set off on an exciting bike ride from London to Paris on the May bank holiday weekend.
Joining a group of 75, they started their 300km journey from the Greenwich Royal Observatory on Saturday afternoon with the aim to arrive at the Eiffel Tower within 24 hours. After departing Greenwich at 4pm the group took on a 60 mile ride to Newhaven, where they would hop on the overnight ferry to France.
Once out of London they headed along country lanes and over the North and South downs. Despite a gloomy weather forecast, it was a pleasant ride down before the heavens finally opened just 30 minutes before they arrived in Newhaven, leaving just enough time to enjoy a hot meal before boarding the ferry.
The Ferry to France departed at 11pm, arriving in France 5am local time ready to take on the 130 mile bike journey through the hilly French countryside. Despite the challenging heavy rain conditions and strong winds, Jason was part of a group of seven to arrive in Paris at 2.40pm in 21 hours and 40 minutes – well within their 24 hour target. Riders were awarded with a sportive jersey and medal with inspiring messages on them.
Jason Jones commented, “It was a fantastic experience and sets me up perfectly for my main challenge of the year, which is the 300 mile ride from Newcastle to London in August, with no rest on the ferry! A massive thank you to Howards Group for all their support and very kind donation on my Just Giving page.”
